Cherry Blossom Print

I FIRST SAW THIS TREE IN 2018 AND THOUGHT “I’LL COME BACK LATER WITH MY CAMERA AND TAKE A PHOTO.”

TOO LATE.

THE BLOSSOMS WERE GONE.

Naively optimistic, I thought the tree on this basketball court would have light pink flowers all the time. That’s what happens when you're a kid from California.

I began documenting the tree everyday in the early spring of 2019. It turned into a fascination. After a rough spring storm the blossoms fell quickly. An abrupt end. But then the leaves came in. They stuck around wearing a few colors until winter. I learned to appreciate how each stage mattered for the bloom in spring.

As the project continued I thought I could document each year. How cool would that be? But in 2020 the tree would endure some changes. A warm winter forced the buds to sprout early. The city pruned a third of the branches. And now amidst a pandemic the hoop and backboard have been removed. Despite this, the tree will continue to bloom.

What began as an observation of the tree turned into an inward reflection of myself, the passage of time, and growth in NYC.
